Gluten-Free Facts & Myths: What You Really Need to Know

Introduction

There's a lot of noise around gluten-free living,  and not all of it is accurate. Whether you're newly diagnosed, raising a coeliac child, or simply trying to understand what gluten-free really means, it's time to separate fact from fiction. Here are some of the most common myths we hear, and the truth behind them.

Myth 1: "Gluten-free is just a fad diet"

Fact: For people with coeliac disease, eating gluten-free isn't a lifestyle choice — it's a medical necessity. Coeliac disease is a serious autoimmune condition affecting around 1 in 100 people in the UK. Even tiny amounts of gluten can cause lasting damage to the gut.

Myth 2: "It's only necessary if you have coeliac disease"

Fact: Non-coeliac gluten sensitivity is also a real condition, causing symptoms like bloating, fatigue, and brain fog without the autoimmune response. Many people feel significantly better on a gluten-free diet even without a coeliac diagnosis.

Myth 3: "Gluten-free automatically means healthy"

Fact: Not necessarily! Many gluten-free products are highly processed and can be high in sugar, fat, and calories. A balanced gluten-free diet still needs plenty of whole foods, vegetables, and nutrients.

Myth 4: "My child will grow out of coeliac disease"

Fact: Coeliac disease is a lifelong condition. There is currently no cure, and children do not grow out of it. The only treatment is a strict, permanent gluten-free diet.

Myth 5: "A little bit won't hurt"

Fact: For someone with coeliac disease, even a crumb of gluten can trigger an immune response and cause intestinal damage — even if there are no obvious symptoms. Strict avoidance is essential, always.

Myth 6: "Gluten-free options in restaurants are always safe"

Fact: Unfortunately not. Cross-contamination in kitchens is a very real risk. A dish labelled "gluten-free" may have been prepared on shared surfaces or with shared utensils. Always communicate clearly with restaurant staff and ask about their preparation processes — our travel safety cards can help make this easier!

Myth 7: "Travelling gluten-free is too difficult"

Fact: With the right preparation, gluten-free travel is absolutely possible and can be wonderful. Researching destinations, carrying safe snacks, and using translated safety cards can make all the difference.

Final Thoughts

Living gluten-free — especially with a child — comes with its challenges, but knowledge is your greatest tool. The more we bust these myths, the safer and more supported our coeliac community becomes.
